Nominated by her daughter Katherine, Janet Heath has proven that age means absolutely nothing.
'A few years ago, not long after turning 60, my mum decided that it was time to lose some weight and start living a healthier lifestyle. Her lifestyle before was not exactly unhealthy but I have been constantly impressed by the challenges she takes on. Last year we entered into the Brighton and Hove sprint triathlon together and completed it in what we like to think was a good time!
This year she’s signed up again and has already started her training. We’re doing separate races this time but will be there to support each other. Mum has had minor injuries that make things like running, cycling and swimming uncomfortable and harder than they should be. That didn't stop her - she started doing pilates and other strengthening exercise classes as well as cycling and running regularly and swimming out to the buoys off Brighton beach when the tide’s in. It’s so common these days for people to reach their 60s and think things are just going to go downhill from now on, but it’s just not the case. Mum was determined to fix her injuries with exercise rather than operations and has surpassed her own expectations. There are a lot of people in their 20s who couldn’t do what she’s doing so I’m extremely proud of her. She’s inspiring. '
