Women's Series - Marianne Clark

A former TV & Media Lawyer, Marianne Clark is now a full time fitness trainer, triathlon and endurance sports coach at Fitso Fitness. She lives in Brighton with her husband and 2 teenage children, training athletes of all abilities.

Triathlon history: I have been involved in triathlon since the early 2000s. I did my first few races on an old mountain bike and in a borrowed wetsuit several sizes too big. I was originally introduced to triathlon by a friend. I was absolutely terrified beforehand but after my first race I was hooked and I have been racing ever since. I have lost count of the number of races I've done but I've raced all over the UK and also abroad. I've also been fortunate enough to have competed at the European and World Triathlon Championships as part of the GB Age Group Triathlon Team on a number of occasions. I am a member of 2 local clubs; Brighton Tri Club and Brighton Multisports Club.

Race distances: Over the years I have raced all distances from Super Sprint (very short) to Ironman (very long). My preferred distance is probably the half Ironman distance (1.9km swim / 90km bike / 21km run) and my best time for the distance is just over 5 hours. I'd like to finish the next one in under 5 hours.

Proudest triathlon moment: I have won a few big races in my time including the first London Triathlon long distance race and the Windsor Triathlon. I have also collected a few medals from national championship races along the way.

Worst triathlon moment: racing in torrential rain and gale force winds at the Bala Triathlon in Wales few years ago. The swim was freezing and horrendously rough and the bike was frankly terrifying. Fortunately the memories fade fast!

Best things about triathlon:

  1. It is a really inclusive and friendly sport that caters for all levels of ability. There are lots of events for people new to the sport - you don't need to be super-fit (or have loads of expensive kit) to have a go, but you might find you end up pretty fit as a result!

  2. If you thrive on a bit of competition, then there are plenty of opportunities to test yourself over longer and tougher courses and to race against the best triathletes from around the country or even further afield.

  3. Because of the nature of the sport no two races are ever the same - the course and the conditions will always be different.

  4. It's great to train in 3 different disciplines - it gives great all-round fitness and keep things interesting and varied.
